Recognizing Signs of a Tree Emergency

Not every tree issue requires immediate attention, but certain signs indicate a potential hazard that could lead to falling branches or the entire tree collapsing. Look out for:

Sudden leaning: If a tree is leaning more than usual, it may be unstable and at risk of falling.

Cracked or split trunk: Large cracks or splits can weaken the tree’s structure.

Dead or hanging branches: These can break off unexpectedly, especially in wind.

Root damage: Exposed or heaving roots from erosion or construction can destabilize the tree.

Proximity to power lines or structures: If a damaged tree is near utilities or your home, it’s an urgent concern.

A tree may require emergency removal when it’s dangerously leaning, cracked, or has suffered significant damage due to a storm. Ignoring these signs can lead to property damage, injury, or worse.

Immediate Steps to Take in a Tree Emergency

If you spot a hazardous tree, prioritize safety above all else. Here’s what to do:

Evacuate the area: Keep everyone, including pets, at a safe distance—ideally at least two tree-lengths away.

Contact utilities if needed: If the tree is entangled with power lines, call your electric company immediately—do not approach it yourself.

Secure the scene: Use tape, cones, or barriers to prevent others from entering the danger zone.

Document the damage: Take photos from a safe distance for insurance purposes.

Call professionals: Reach out to a 24/7 emergency tree service like Harrity Tree Specialists for assessment and removal.

When possible, stay clear of the area around damaged trees and call the local emergency services, utility company, or an arborist. Resist the urge to handle it yourself, as tree work can be dangerous without proper equipment and training.

Hiring a Professional for Emergency Tree Removal

Emergency tree removal is not a DIY job. Professional arborists have the expertise, tools, and insurance to handle these situations safely. When choosing a service:

Look for ISA-certified arborists (International Society of Arboriculture) to ensure they follow industry standards.

Verify licensing and insurance to protect against liability.

Ask about 24/7 availability, as emergencies don’t wait for business hours.

Get a clear estimate, though costs can vary based on tree size, location, and complexity—typically ranging from $500 to $2,000 or more.

Professional arborists have the experience and equipment needed to safely and efficiently remove or prune severely damaged trees and haul away unwanted debris. At Harrity Tree Specialists, our team is trained to assess risks and perform removals with minimal disruption to your property.

Costs, Insurance, and What to Expect

Emergency tree removal can be costly, but homeowner’s insurance often covers it if the tree damages your property (e.g., falls on your house). Always check your policy and file claims promptly with photos and documentation.

During the process, expect the team to:

Assess the site for hazards.

Use specialized equipment like chainsaws, cranes, or lifts.

Remove the tree in sections to avoid further damage.

Clean up debris and stump if requested.

Most services offer rapid response, often arriving within hours.

Preventing Future Tree Emergencies

Prevention is key to avoiding costly emergencies. Schedule regular tree inspections by a certified arborist to identify issues early. Proper pruning, soil care, and monitoring for pests can extend your trees’ health. For more on tree care best practices, visit resources from the International Society of Arboriculture.

Conclusion

Emergency tree removal is about protecting what matters most—your family and home. By knowing the signs and acting quickly, you can mitigate risks. If you’re facing a tree emergency, don’t hesitate to contact Harrity Tree Specialists for expert, reliable service. We’re here 24/7 to help keep your property safe.

Owning a mature tree in the Portland area comes with responsibilities. To ensure your trees stay healthy and safe, an arborist is your best ally. But what should you ask them? Here are 5 key questions from Harrity Tree Specialists:

1. Can you assess the health of my tree?

A certified arborist can diagnose problems and potential hazards. They’ll check for pests, diseases, structural damage, and assess soil and environmental factors. This question helps you gauge their expertise.

2. What’s your approach to tree care?

It’s not just about trimming! A good arborist takes a holistic approach, considering:

Tree health: Diseases, infestations, structural issues.

Soil quality: pH levels, nutrients, and texture.

Environment: Sunlight, moisture, and air quality.

3. What can be done to preserve my tree’s health?

Your arborist can recommend solutions like:

Pruning: Removes dead branches, improves growth.

Fertilization: Replenishes vital nutrients.

Pest management: Controls damaging infestations.

Watering: Ensures adequate hydration.

4. What are the signs that my tree needs to be removed?

Sometimes removal is necessary. Signs include:

Untreatable pests or diseases.

Severe structural damage.

Hazardous leaning.

Overcrowding.

Dead or dying trees.

5. Which tree should I plant in my backyard?

An arborist can guide your choice by considering:

Climate: Temperature and moisture needs.

Yard size: Mature tree dimensions.

Soil type: Matching species to soil.

Purpose: Shade, privacy, aesthetics.

Regulations: Local planting restrictions.

Pruning

Routine tree care is essential for Oregonians. The best time to trim and prune trees is when they’re dormant – between winter and early spring (November to March). The best time to trim is between November and March. Trees are least vulnerable to insects and disease during this time. At HTS, we never trim a tree unless it needs it, we understand that optimal growth can also mean letting a tree be. Our professional residential tree care services help ensure your trees stay beautiful and strong for years to come.

Add Extra Mulch

To prepare for winter weather, give newly planted trees some TLC. The root zone should be completely covered with a thick layer of mulch (at least three inches wide). As the mulch settles, you can add more to ensure maximum protection. Additionally, mulch suppresses weed growth and provides essential nutrients as it decomposes.

Protection

Young trees can be very vulnerable in their early stages, using barriers to protect them from animal damage can be an effective way to combat these factors. Consider this to avoid having a new plant go to waste.

Get an early inspection

Getting an early inspection can be a difference-maker between optimal growth or disaster. Whether you’ve noticed signs that your trees need an inspection or you just want to be prepared, getting a tree check-up is one of the best ways to keep your trees healthy throughout the year.

Height Matters: Before purchasing, measure your ceiling height and subtract a foot for the tree topper and stand.

Freshness Test: Gently run your hand along the tree’s branches. If the needles stay put and feel soft, the tree is fresh.

Water Regularly: Keep your tree hydrated by filling the stand with water daily to prevent it from drying out.

Placement: Avoid placing your tree near heat sources like fireplaces or radiators to keep it looking vibrant throughout the season.

As winter rolls into the Pacific Northwest, most people are preparing for the holidays, cozying up indoors, and enjoying the stunning seasonal beauty of our region. While the trees outside may not get the same attention as the one adorned with lights and ornaments, ensuring their health and safety is crucial this time of year.

Winter can pose unique challenges for trees in the PNW. Heavy rain, high winds, and occasional snow or ice storms can damage even the healthiest of trees. Weak, unbalanced, or diseased trees are especially vulnerable, risking property damage or personal injury if limbs or entire trees fall. At Harrity Tree Specialists, we understand the importance of winter tree care in maintaining safety and preserving the beauty of your landscape.

The Importance of Winter Tree Safety

Winter tree care isn’t just about maintaining appearances (although that’s a bonus!); it’s about protecting your property, loved ones, and the health of your trees.

Protect Your Property and Loved Ones

Even in winter, trees add incredible value to your property, but they can become a hazard if not properly maintained. Dead or diseased limbs, or even seemingly healthy trees, may fail during a storm. Unfortunately, these dangers can go unnoticed without a professional assessment.

A skilled arborist can identify potential risks before harsh weather strikes, preventing costly damage and ensuring the safety of everyone on your property.

Preserve Tree Health

Winter is the dormant season for trees, making it the ideal time for trimming and pruning. Professional care during this time causes less stress to the tree and helps protect it from pests and diseases. This preventative maintenance restores balance, improves overall structure, and prepares trees to thrive in the spring.

Why Winter Is the Perfect Time for Tree Work

The unique winter climate of the Pacific Northwest offers an excellent opportunity for tree care. Here’s why winter is the ideal time to assess and maintain your trees:

Better Visibility for Inspections
Without leaves, it’s easier to spot structural issues, decay, or pest infestations. Arborists can quickly identify what needs attention to ensure your trees remain safe and healthy.

Minimized Stress for Trees
Dormant trees recover more easily from pruning and trimming. Additionally, pests are less active in winter, reducing the chance of new infestations.

Trees are not only beautiful but play an essential role in creating vibrant, healthy landscapes. However, even the healthiest trees need maintenance to stay strong and safe. When it comes to managing tree care, knowing whether to opt for tree trimming or full tree removal can make a significant difference in the health, beauty, and safety of your property. Here’s a breakdown of when to choose each service.

When to Choose Tree Trimming

Tree trimming, also known as pruning, is a maintenance service that focuses on removing specific branches or parts of a tree. This service is ideal when the goal is to improve the tree’s health, appearance, or safety without removing the tree entirely.

Signs Tree Trimming is Right for You:

Branch Overgrowth: Overgrown branches can obscure sunlight, obstruct views, or cause structural issues. Trimming these branches can help restore shape and function.

Dead or Diseased Branches: Removing damaged or diseased branches prevents the spread of decay and maintains the tree’s health.

Improving Growth Patterns: Selectively removing certain branches can encourage the tree to grow in a more balanced, structurally sound way.

Seasonal Maintenance: Regular pruning helps trees withstand storms and grow stronger. It’s also beneficial for flowering trees that bloom best with seasonal pruning.

If your tree is generally healthy and not posing any immediate risks, trimming will often be enough to keep it in shape.

When Tree Removal is Necessary

While trimming can often address most issues, there are times when removing the tree entirely is the safest and most responsible decision. Tree removal can prevent potential hazards, protect nearby structures, and maintain the overall health of your landscape.

Signs It’s Time for Tree Removal:

Tree is Severely Diseased or Dying: When a tree is beyond recovery due to disease or decay, removal prevents the spread to other trees.

Storm or Structural Damage: If a tree has suffered extensive damage that compromises its stability, removal may be necessary for safety.

Roots Causing Property Damage: Trees with invasive root systems that are damaging foundations, sidewalks, or plumbing are often better removed than trimmed.

Safety Hazards: Trees leaning significantly or with a high risk of falling, especially near structures or high-traffic areas, may need to be removed to prevent accidents.

When trees pose immediate threats to people or property, tree removal is often the safest solution to ensure your landscape’s health and safety.

How to Decide: Consulting a Certified Arborist

If you’re uncertain whether trimming or removal is right for your tree, consulting a certified arborist can be invaluable. Arborists assess your tree’s health, growth, and risks and provide recommendations that best serve both the tree and your property. Choosing a professional ensures the job is done safely, responsibly, and with minimal impact on your surrounding landscape.

Choosing the right arborist in Portland is a crucial decision for homeowners and business owners alike. The health of your trees, the safety of your property, and the long-term beauty of your landscape depend on expert tree care. Whether you need pruning, tree removal, or ongoing maintenance, it’s important to know what makes an arborist company exceptional. In this article, we’ll discuss what to look for when selecting the best arborist, and why Harrity Tree Specialists stands out as the top choice for tree care in the Portland area.

1. Certified Arborists

When searching for the best arborist, certification is key. Look for companies with certified arborists through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). ISA certification indicates that the arborist has undergone rigorous training and testing in tree biology, safety standards, and the latest tree care techniques. Certified arborists have the expertise to diagnose tree health issues, recommend appropriate care, and perform services that keep your trees thriving.

Harrity Tree Specialists takes pride in our team of ISA-certified arborists. Our experts are dedicated to providing high-quality, professional tree care based on years of experience and continued education in the field.

At Harrity Tree Specialists, we offer a full suite of services, including:

Tree and shrub pruning

Plant health care and diagnosis

Consultation and site analysis

We’re equipped to handle everything from routine maintenance to complex tree care projects, ensuring your trees receive the best care possible.

3. Safety and Insurance

Tree care is a dangerous job, especially when it comes to tree removal and working at heights. Safety should be a top priority for any arborist company you hire. Make sure the company follows strict safety protocols, uses the proper equipment, and is fully insured. Liability insurance is essential to protect you in case of accidents or damage to your property.

At Harrity Tree Specialists, safety is always our top concern. Our team is fully trained in the latest safety practices, and we are fully insured to give you peace of mind while we work on your property.

4. Positive Reviews and Reputation

A strong reputation in the community is a sign of a trustworthy arborist. Take the time to read reviews from past clients and ask for recommendations from neighbors or friends. A company with consistently positive reviews for their professionalism, customer service, and quality of work is more likely to deliver exceptional results.

We’re proud of our long-standing reputation in Portland. Harrity Tree Specialists has been serving the local community for over 30 years, and our clients regularly praise our punctuality, professionalism, and the quality of our tree care services.

This includes assessing the health of your trees, offering expert advice on the best care solutions, and giving a clear and honest estimate for the work. Look for arborists who communicate well and are transparent about costs and the scope of the project.

Storms are a common threat to Portland’s trees and landscapes, but proper tree care can make a significant difference in minimizing damage. At Harrity Tree Specialists, we prioritize storm preparation through expert tree trimming, ensuring your trees act as natural wind buffers and are resilient against high winds.

1. Regular Maintenance Reduces Risk

Regular tree maintenance is key to reducing the risk of property damage during storms. When trees are properly pruned, their branches are less likely to break or fall during high winds. Certified arborists strategically trim branches to promote strong growth and remove weak or dead limbs that pose hazards. This proactive care strengthens your trees, enabling them to better withstand the stresses of stormy weather while also protecting your home and surrounding property from falling branches.

2. Avoid Improper Pruning

Improper pruning not only damages the health of a tree but can also make it more vulnerable to storm damage. Pruning techniques that leave trees unbalanced or weak increase the chances of branches snapping or entire trees falling. Certified arborists, like our team at Harrity Tree Specialists, understand tree anatomy and the correct methods for pruning that strengthen the tree’s structure, reducing storm-related hazards. By ensuring your trees are pruned by experts, you protect your landscape and prevent costly damage.

3. Timely Tree Care

Timing is essential when it comes to storm preparation. The best time to trim trees is during their dormant season, well before storm season begins. This allows trees to recover from pruning and grow stronger. Waiting until a storm warning to prune is too late and can increase the risk of damaging your tree. By scheduling regular maintenance ahead of time, you ensure your trees are in optimal shape to weather storms.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a newcomer to landscaping, these tips from Harrity Tree Specialists can help you achieve a stunning outdoor space. Here are our top landscaping tips to enhance your Portland property.

1. Plan Before You Plant

Before you start digging, take the time to plan your landscape. Consider factors like sunlight, soil type, and water drainage. Sketch out your ideas and think about the long-term growth of plants and trees. Planning ahead can save you time and money, ensuring your landscape thrives for years to come.

2. Choose Native Plants

Native plants are well-adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, making them easier to care for and more resilient. In Portland, consider incorporating plants like Oregon grape, salal, and sword ferns. These plants require less water and maintenance, and they provide a habitat for local wildlife.

3. Incorporate Mulching

Mulching is an excellent way to improve soil health, retain moisture, and suppress weeds. Organic mulches, such as wood chips or compost, break down over time, enriching the soil with nutrients. Apply a layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and flower beds to keep your landscape looking fresh and healthy.

4. Prune Regularly

Regular pruning is essential for maintaining the health and appearance of your trees and shrubs. Remove dead or diseased branches, and shape plants to promote healthy growth. Pruning also improves air circulation and allows more sunlight to reach the interior of the plant, reducing the risk of disease.

5. Install Proper Irrigation

Efficient irrigation is key to a thriving landscape. Install a drip irrigation system or soaker hoses to deliver water directly to the roots of your plants, reducing water waste. Set timers to water your garden early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation.

6. Create Outdoor Living Spaces

Transform your yard into an extension of your home by creating outdoor living spaces. Add a patio, deck, or seating area to enjoy your landscape. Incorporate elements like fire pits, water features, and outdoor lighting to enhance the ambiance and functionality of your outdoor space.
